Philippine Council for Industry and
Energy Research and Development

Brief Description of Mandate/Functions with respect to Geoscientific Activities:
PCIERD is mandated to serve as the central agency in planning, monitoring and promotion of scientific and technological research for applications in the industry, energy, utilities and infrastructure sectors. It has the authority to specify national development goals, draw corresponding plans/programs and policies and set priorities for research in its delineated sectors guided by its own vision and mission and the DOST's vision of a competent and competitive science and technology community with a social conscience. Among the priority sectors that PCIERD supports is the Mining and Minerals sector in terms of Grant-in-Aid for R & D projects, technology transfer and information dissemination activities through its network of research institutions.

Ongoing Projects/Research Activities:

  1. Study of the Bohol Crust-Mantle Suites Emplaced in Contrasting Tectonic Environments
    Implementing Agency: UP-NIGS
This study aims to assess the geological setting and corresponding mineralization potentials of Bohol. The model that will be developed can also be used in other areas and serve as a basis for looking into the feasibility of correlating a tectonic model for the regional history of the Central Philippines.
  2. Zamboanga Peninsula: Geological Characterization of a New Mining District
    Implementing Agency: UP-NIGS
This project aims to (a) determine the geological setting and geochemical characteristics of the basement complex of the peninsula; (b) conduct structural analysis of the area and look into all the available remotely sensed data to study possible spatial relationships between geochemical signatures, lithologic contacts and mineralized data; (c) delineate the distribution of of the different types of known metallic mineralization in the proposed study area and; (d) look into the interrelationship among the basement complex, volcanism and hydrothermal systems in the proposed study area.
