Mines and Geosciences Bureau

Brief Description of Mandate/Functions with respect to Geoscientific Activities:
The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) is the primary government agency under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that is responsible for the conservation, management, development and proper use of the country's mineral resources including those in reservations, watershed areas and lands of the public domain.

As mandated under the Philippine Mining Act of 1995, the MGB is responsible for the administration and disposition of mineral lands and mineral resources, and the conduct of geological, mining, metallurgical, chemical and other related researches including geological and geophysical surveys.

The applications of geosciences are finding wider applications. These include the assessment of infrastructure projects and sanitary landfill sites, land use and urban planning, prediction and mitigation of geohazards such as flooding, landslide and subsidence. With the technical expertise of its geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists, the MGB has the capability to address problems on geohazards, mine environment, mine safety, and coastal degradation/pollution, among others.

Ongoing Projects/Research Activities:

  1. Environmental and Natural Resources Management
  2. Support to government programs for poverty alleviation and social concerns:
geotechnical assessment of areas for development projects that are susceptible to natural hazards such as flooding, subsidence, landslides, etc.
surveys for community water resources development
generation and production of appropriate geologic maps for land use planning and related purposes
  3. Intensification of the Information Communication Education (ICE) Campaigns:
publication of geologic maps and reports relative to water resources, geologic hazards, landfill sites development and mineral resources
preparation of ICE manuscripts about mining and geology
  4. Research and Development
  5. Mineral Resources Exploration Program
  6. Coastal and submarine geological and geo-environmental surveys
